Over the past weekend I took the ubuntuforums.org site offline and upgraded the software to the latest Vbulletin 3.8 release candidate. Previously we had been running version 3.7.4p1 and felt the 3.8 serious was stable enough to move forward with even though its still a RC. The upgrade took about an hour and gave the forum community improved features to Social Groups, Private Messages, Profile Privacy, Albums and other misc fixes.
Thanks again to everyone helped test and find bugs after the upgrade.
I think it introduced the random 503 proxy get errors though…

It still baffles me that Ubuntu Forums runs on proprietary software. Even with the whole vBulletin is better then everything else rational, some things are not worth being “pragmatic” about.

I know you probably get that a lot and I am sorry about that. But I mean it’ll continue forever, because using or advertising the use of proprietary software in an FOSS community has always always been taboo, and probably will always continue to be taboo, because the FOSS movement started with the idea that proprietary software is wrong and immoral and generally a bad thing, and this idea will always stay with it because it was the founding principal.

Hopefully someday we’ll get native openid support inside vbulletin. However, we have the source code and there is a powerful API and I am sure openid support could be added by creating a 3rd party application that would plug into vbulletin. It’s just a matter of finding time
