Ulnar Nerve Transposition Surgery - Update 2

2008 July 29
by Ryan

Just another update on this situation. During the past two weeks I’ve had increased dull pain in my arm, spasms/cramping in my left hand and the incision is still very swollen, discolored and sensitive. It actually hurts to type because my fingers lock up and get very tired.

I go back to the doctor on Sep 05, but frankly I am not very optimistic. I’m questioning rather or not this surgery was worth it….

sorry to hear your arm’s not doing so well - probably the humidity…I can think of a place where it’s not so humid!

Which ulnar nerve surgery did you have, decompression or transposition? How long ago? I had decompression 6 weeks ago today (which is the less invasive of the two) and my incision is still sensitive. It was discolored for about 3 weeks after surgery. You just have to give it some time, nerves take a long time to heal. Good luck! Please come visit our forums and share your story, if you like.

Hey ubuntu-geek - don’t want you to think I’m making light of your surgery by any means. After I re-read my original comment it seemed pretty insensitive. I seriously wish you the best and a speedy recovery!

I had my ulnar nerve transposed last February (as well as a ligament reconstruction). It has gone pretty well, the sensitivity does lessen (just wear a brace if you are being physical), and the area that is sensitive is getting smaller. Trust me, if someone would barely glance it, I would scream because pain would shoot all the way down to my hand. Anyway, my only real complication from this surgery is that my hand and pinkie and ring fingers have gone numb twice while doing intense workouts. the first time, this numbness lasted a few hours, this time it has lasted over 12 hours. (It is not a bad numbness, just diminished sensation)
Good Luck. There are a LOT worse nerve injuries, trust me. I had my median completely destroyed. Just keep with it.
