ubuntu feisty beta has no macbook pro love

Well I decided to setup dual boot on my macbook pro tonight, I installed refit, edited the partitions with boot camp and burned by feisty beta cd.. Only to be utterly disappointed, the beta cd won’t even boot it crashes with an X error. Other people have reported similar things on the Apple Intel section at Ubuntu Forums.

Once that failed I decided to go download Feisty Herd 5 and give it a try, I figured why not. Luck! it booted up without a hitch and I began the installation it took about 20 minutes or so. At 99% the installer crashed, so I rebooted and thought ah well maybe it actually finished. On the refit screen I selected Ubuntu, bah! Nothing it wants a boot disk.

So in the end, I still got my partitioned space I’ll just wait for the final release of feisty and hope that works. But still I am pretty disappointed I wanted to fiddle :)

Try hitting the Partitions screen in the rEFIt startup screen; every time I install a new Linux on a mac, I hit this. It dumps a bunch of zany stuff on the screen and asks if it can make this change. If you say yes, then it boots into Linux ok.

I’ll give that a try. Thanks for the tip.

grub, the default boot loader for ubuntu, does not work with EFI. You will need to manually install lilo onto your newly installed system. A good guide is here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=198453
