I currently use a dns hosting provider for my more popular domains and then host them myself, except for the ubuntuforums which canonical providers the hosting for.

However, I have become increasingly interested in moving my my own dns cluster and developing a tool to manage my domains and possibly providing a free or low cost dns hosting platform. Enter moxiewebdns, the backend is powered by PowerDNS and mySQL and the web front end is developed with php using mySQL as the storage engine.

I decided to go back to my own hosting after trying out mediatemple for a few months. I was intrigued by their “grid” hosting platform, but in the end was ultimately disappointed in the speed and lack luster features for multiple users.
